Engelberg, Ernst 

Born Apr. 5, 1909, in Haslach. German historian (German Democratic Republic [GDR]). Member of the German Academy of Sciences (1961).

Engelberg joined the Communist Party of Germany in 1930. He was arrested in 1934 for taking part in the antifascist movement and was sentenced to a year and a half in prison. He emigrated in 1935 but returned to Germany after World War II. From 1949 to 1960, Engelberg was a professor at the Institute of German History at the University of Leipzig, and from 1951 to 1960 he served as director of the institute. He was director of the Institute of History of the German Academy of Sciences from 1960 to 1970. From 1959 to 1965 he held the post of president of the National Committee of Historians of the GDR.

Engelberg’s principal works deal with the history of Germany in modern times (especially the second half of the 19th century), the history of the German working-class movement, and the theory and methodology of historical science.
