Engel’son, Vladimir Aristovich

Born May 19 (31), 1821, in St. Petersburg; died Dec. 17 (29), 1857, on the island of Jersey, Great Britain. Figure in the Russian liberation movement.

A member of the dvorianstvo (nobility), Engel’son dropped out of the Aleksandrovskii Lycée in 1839. He served in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1845 to 1848. He was a close friend of N. A. Speshnev’s. Arrested on Aug. 4, 1849, with other members of the Petrashevskii circle, Engel’son was imprisoned in the Peter and Paul Fortress but was soon released. In 1850 he emigrated and became associated with A. I. Herzen, Engel’son took part in the activities of the Free Russian Printing House and was the author of agitational pamphlets and proclamations.
