baseband Electronic data prior to any modification. It refers to analog or digital data before they are merged with other signals (multiplexed) or intermixed into a carrier wave (modulated). For example, the output of an analog microphone is baseband. Data being processed in the computer's memory are baseband. In a digital wireless system, the digital data are considered baseband before they are modulated into a carrier frequency for over-the-air transmission. See multiplexing and modulation.
baseband [′bās‚band] (communications) The band of frequencies occupied by all transmitted signals used to modulate the radio wave.
