In north-central TX, southwest of Fort Worth; organized Jan 25, 1856 from Bosque and Coryell counties. Name Origin: For George Bernard Erath (1813-91), Indian fighter, Texas Ranger, and legislator.

Area (sq mi): 1089.80 (land 1086.33; water 3.47). Pop per sq mi: 31.40.
Pop 2005: 34,076. State rank: 84. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.30%; 1990-2000 17.90%. Pop 2000: 33,001 (White 82.60%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 15.00%; Asian 0.40%; Other 9.10%). Foreign born: 7.30%. Median age: 31.40.
Income 2000: per capita $16,655; median household $30,708; Pop below poverty level: 16.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,227-$23,332.
Unemployment 2004: 4.20%. Change from 2000: 1.90%. Median travel time to work: 20.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 17.40%.
