Erickson, Milton H.

Erickson, Milton H. (Hyland) (1901–80) psychiatrist; born in Aurum, Nev. He conducted experiments in hypnosis under psychologist Clark Hull at the University of Wisconsin, where he received the M.D. (1925). He carried on research at the Worcester (Mass.) State Hospital and the Wayne County (Mich.) General Hospital and taught at Wayne State University (1934–48). In 1979 he entered private practice in Phoenix, Ariz. He founded the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis in 1957 and became the nation's best-known practitioner of hypnotherapy.
