On central western border of NY on Lake Erie, south of Niagara Falls; organized Apr 2, 1821 from Niagara County. Name Origin: For the Erie Indian tribe of Iroquoian linguistic stock, who lived along the southern shore of Lake Erie.

Area (sq mi): 1226.89 (land 1044.21; water 182.68). Pop per sq mi: 891.30.
Pop 2005: 930,703. State rank: 8. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.10%; 1990-2000 -1.90%. Pop 2000: 950,265 (White 80.80%; Black or African American 13.00%; Hispanic or Latino 3.30%; Asian 1.50%; Other 3.30%). Foreign born: 4.50%. Median age: 38.00.
