Ermakov, Vasilii Petrovich

Born Feb. 27 (Mar. 11), 1845, in the village of Teriukha, now Gomel’ Raion, Gomel’ Oblast, Byelorussian SSR; died Mar. 16, 1922, in Kiev. Russian mathematician. Corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1884).

Ermakov was a professor of the University of Kiev from 1877. He was also one of the organizers of the Kiev Physics and Mathematics Society (1889). In 1870 he discovered a very interesting test, in terms of perceptibility and simplicity, for the convergence of series. Ermakov also suggested the need to investigate the overall increase of an integral in the calculus of variations. He devoted much time to pedagogical work. From 1884 to 1886 he published Zhurnal elementarnoi matematiki.
