Hermonthis (hərmŏn`thĭs), ancient city, N Egypt, 8 mi (13 km) S of Thebes. It was founded in prehistoric times and was prominent during the period of Roman supremacy. Originally the shrine of Month, a hawk-headed deity, Hermonthis has a temple built c.1500 B.C. and reconstructed by the Ptolemies. Modern Armant or Erment is on the site.

Hermonthis

Ancient town, Upper Egypt. Located near Thebes on the western bank of the Nile River and now an archaeological site, it was the seat of a sun cult and was a royal coronation site. It was the original home of the rulers of Thebes, who reunited Egypt after c. 2130–1939 BC. Excavations (1929–38) uncovered the Bucheum (the necropolis of the mummified Buchis bulls), cemeteries of various periods, and part of the town area, including the temple of the war god Mentu.
