Ernest I

Ernest I, 1784–1844, duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (see under Saxe-Coburg Saxe-Coburg , Ger. Sachsen-Coburg, former duchy, central Germany. A possession of the Ernestine branch of the house of Wettin, it was given by Ernest the Pious (d. 1675) of Saxe-Gotha to his son Albert.

); brother of Leopold I of Belgium, uncle of Queen Victoria of England, and father of Victoria's consort, Prince Albert. He succeeded to the duchy of Coburg in 1806 and acquired Gotha in 1826.
