On southern border of AL; organized Dec 10, 1868 from Baldwin and Conecuh counties. Name Origin: For Escambia River, probably a Spanish rendering of a Choctaw or Chickasaw Indian word but origin is in dispute. There may be a connection to Spanish cambiar 'to exchange, trade, barter.' River formerly called the Pensacola.

Pop 2005: 38,082. State rank: 32. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.90%; 1990-2000 8.20%. Pop 2000: 38,440 (White 63.90%; Black or African American 30.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.20%; Other 4.50%). Foreign born: 0.60%. Median age: 36.90.
Income 2000: per capita $14,396; median household $28,319; Pop below poverty level: 20.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $18,687-$19,758.

On northwestern border of FL, bordered on the south by the Gulf of Mexico; original county; organized Jul 21, 1822 (prior to statehood). It is one of the two first counties; the other is Saint Johns. Name Origin: For the river, which forms its eastern border; probably a Spanish rendering of a Choctaw or Chickasaw Indian word but origin is in dispute. River formerly called the Pensacola. There may be a connection to Spanish cambiar 'to trade.'
