Espíritu Santo (ĕspē`rēt
sän`tō) or Santo, volcanic island, 1,485 sq mi (3,846 sq km), South Pacific, largest and westernmost island of Vanuatu Vanuatu , formerly New Hebrides , officially Republic of Vanuatu, independent republic (2005 est. pop. 206,000), c.5,700 sq mi (14,760 sq km), South Pacific, E of Australia...... Click the link for more information. (formerly New Hebrides). Generally mountainous and fertile, the island produces copra, coffee, and cocoa. Its indigenous population is mainly Melanesian. Espiritu Santo was explored in 1606 by the Portuguese navigator Pedro Fernandez de Queiros. It was the site of a large U.S. air base during World War II. In 1980, shortly before Vanuatu was to become independent from France and Britain, residents of the island staged an armed revolt to secede from the other islands. The rebellion was quickly put down with the help of troops from Britain and Papua New Guinea. Espíritu Santoformerly MarinaIsland, northwestern Vanuatu, southwestern South Pacific Ocean. Vanuatu's largest island, Espíritu Santo is about 75 mi (120 km) long and 45 mi (70 km) wide and covers 1,420 sq mi (3,677 sq km). Volcanic in origin, it has a mountain range running along its western coast; Mount Tabwémasana rises to 6,165 ft (1,879 m). It is heavily wooded and has broad, fertile, well-watered valleys. Agriculturally developed, its principal settlement is Luganville (Santo) on the southeastern coast. Espíritu Santo an island in the Pacific Ocean. The island is of volcanic origin and has a maximum elevation of 1,810 m. There are tropical rain forests on Espíritu Santo, and the island has coconut palm, coffee, cacao, and sugarcane plantations.
