Espartero, Baldomero, prince de Vergara

    0.10 sec.

Espartero, Baldomero, prince de Vergara

(born Oct. 27, 1793, Granátula, Spain—died Jan. 8, 1879, Logroño) Spanish general and politician. After the accession of Isabella II, he joined the government forces opposed to Don Carlos (see Carlism) and helped win the First Carlist War. He became head of the government in 1840 and was appointed regent in 1841. In 1843 a generals' revolt forced him to flee to England, where he lived until 1849. He returned to Spain, then shared control of the government (1854–56) with Gen. Leopoldo O'Donnell (1809–67) before returning to retirement.
