Eşref, Mehmet
Born 1846 in Gelenbe, Manisa Vilayet; died May 22, 1912, in Kirkağaç, Manisa Vilayet. Turkish poet. Esref served as the head of a district from 1878 to 1900 and after 1908. In 1900 he was sentenced to a year in prison for criticizing the despotic system. In 1903, Eşref fled to Egypt, where he published all of his antimonarchist and anticlerical works, including The Anti-Christ (vols. 1–2, 1904–07), The Shah and the Padishah (1908), and There Is a Fire in Iran (1908).
