He examines works from Menippus through Julian, Seneca and Lucian, analyzes satire by addition in Swift's A Tale of a Tub and the battles leading to The Mechanical Operation of the Spirit, satire by genre in Boileu and Pope's Essay on Criticism, satire by annotation in Pope's Dunciad and satire by incursion in the ever-helpful Clarissa.
Pope's Essay on Criticism insists "a critic should not judge a work simply by its parts, but should judge the whole, entirety of the work.
