EsseneMember of a Jewish sect active in Palestine from the 2nd century BC to the 1st century AD. The Essenes formed small monastic communities whose members strictly observed the laws of Moses and the Sabbath and held their property in common. They withdrew from society, avoiding temple worship in Jerusalem and supporting themselves by manual labor. They usually excluded women. It is likely that the Dead Sea Scrolls were composed, copied, or collected by the Essenes. How to thank TFD for its existence? And the chapter, "Jesus is not a sadist," is fully refuted by the hunchbacked dwarf's transformation of Gehenna from the Essene death chamber in which non-Essenes were exterminated, into the Christian Hell in which the Religious Right's detractors, including moderate Christians, are tortured by flamethrowers for all eternity (Mark 9:47-49). On the opposite side, the Enochian tradition remained separate and eventually developed into Essene Judaism at Qumran--described in his previous book, Beyond the Essene Hypothesis: The Parting of the Ways between Qumran and Enochic Judaism. |
