Esso Petroleum

(full name, Esso Petroleum Co., Ltd.), a British oil company; a subsidiary of the Exxon Corporation, a monopoly in the USA. Esso Petroleum, which was founded in 1888, transports and refines petroleum and distributes petroleum products in Great Britain and Ireland. In 1975 it had total revenues of £1,500 million and a net profit of £28.7 million; in that year the company had 9,600 employees. Esso Petroleum refines about 35,000 tons of petroleum annually.
