Essonne (ĕsôn`), department (1990 pop. 1,096,300), N central France. Évry Évry , town (1991 pop. 45,854), capital of Essonne dept., N central France. The major industry is the manufacture of aeronautic equipment. A suburb of Paris, it is one of several developments built since 1965.

a department of France. Part of the territory of Essonne is within Greater Paris. Area, 1,800 sq km. Population, 979,000 (1977). The capital of Essonne is the city of Evry. In 1968 industry employed 27 percent of the economically active population of Essonne, and agriculture 4 percent. The department has machine-building, food-processing, clothing, and printing industries. Agriculture in Essonne is directed toward the local market.
