(chemical engineering)
A catalytic process which involves the direct addition of ethylene oxide to an alkyl phenol or to an aliphatic alcohol.

Products that contain myreth, oleth, laureth, ceteareth (and any other -"eth"), PEG, polyethylene, polyethylene glycol, polyoxyethylene, or oxynol typically undergo ethoxylation and therefore are suspected of containing 1,4-dioxane.
Sodium Laureth Sulfate actually is made from coconut oil, which goes through the ethoxylation process.
