Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid, Disodium Salt Of
(also complexone III, trilon B, disodium salt of EDTA), a colorless crystalline compound that is readily soluble in water and bases;, the most important complexone. The disodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid forms stable chelate compounds with many doubly and triply charged cations. For this reason, it is used in complexonometric titration for the detection of calcium, molybdenum, cobalt, copper, nickel, zinc, iron, manganese, aluminum, gallium, and the rare-earth metals and for the indirect detection of certain anions, including phosphate, sulfate, and cyanide; it is also used for binding ions that interfere with photometric and titrimetric analysis. Because it is such a good complexing agent, it is used for softening water and removing traces of metals from pharmaceutical and chemical preparations. It is produced from ethylenediamine and monochloroacetic acid. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
