In northeastern AL, northwest of Anniston; organized as Baine County Dec 7, 1866; name changed Dec 1, 1868. Name Origin: Originally for David W. Baine, Confederate officer killed in the war. County abolished Dec 3, 1867 because he was a secessionist. Recreated and renamed for the Etowah Indian mound in GA. Meaning of Cherokee itawa is unknown but may be related to Creek italwa 'town, tribe.'

Area (sq mi): 548.75 (land 534.82; water 13.93). Pop per sq mi: 192.90.
Pop 2005: 103,189. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.30%; 1990-2000 3.60%. Pop 2000: 103,459 (White 82.10%; Black or African American 14.70%; Hispanic or Latino 1.70%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.90%). Foreign born: 1.60%. Median age: 38.30.
Income 2000: per capita $16,783; median household $31,170; Pop below poverty level: 15.70%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,410-$23,744.
Unemployment 2004: 6.30%. Change from 2000: -1.10%. Median travel time to work: 24.50 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 24.80%.
