In northeastern AL, northwest of Anniston; organized as Baine County Dec 7, 1866; name changed Dec 1, 1868. Name Origin: Originally for David W. Baine, Confederate officer killed in the war. County abolished Dec 3, 1867 because he was a secessionist. Recreated and renamed for the Etowah Indian mound in GA. Meaning of Cherokeeitawa is unknown but may be related to Creek italwa 'town, tribe.'
