Ettinghausen, Richard

Ettinghausen, Richard (1906–79) art historian, museum curator; born in Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany. He studied at the University of Frankfurt (Ph.D. 1931), the University of Munich, and at Cambridge, England. He emigrated to New York City (1934), worked at the American Institute of Persian Art and Archeology, New York City, (1934–37), and at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1937–38). He was associated with several prestigious institutions, including the Smithsonian's Freer Gallery, Washington, D.C. (1944–67). A noted scholar of Islamic art, he wrote many books on the subject.
