Eustathius of Thessalonica

Born circa 1115; died circa 1193. Byzantine philologist and teacher of rhetoric; metropolitan of Thessalonica.

Eustathius was the author of commentaries on Homer, Pindar, Aristophanes, and the geographer Dionysius Periegetes and of a pamphlet on the decay of monastic morality. He was the only Byzantine philologist who not only reproduced an original text but also made conjectures to restore a corrupted one.
