Evald Rudolfovich Mustel

Mustel’, Eval’d Rudol’fovich 

Born May 21 (June 3), 1911, in Sevastopol’. Soviet astronomer. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953). Member of the CPSU since 1964.

Mustel’ graduated in 1935 from Moscow State University, where he began teaching in 1939; from 1944 to 1951 he was a professor. Between 1946 and 1960 he worked at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and since 1957 he has been at the Astronomical Council of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (appointed chairman in 1963).

Mustel’ developed the theory of radiative equilibrium of stellar atmospheres for frequency-dependent absorption coefficients. He gave a physical picture of processes occurring during nova and supernova outbursts. Mustel’ studied the causes of corpuscular radiation and physical phenomena in active regions of the sun and the effects of solar corpuscular streams on the earth’s atmosphere. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR (1952), he has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and several medals.
