Their story was immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's narrative poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie (1847), a melodramatic fiction, memorized in its day by every American schoolchild, of the teenage bride Evangeline Bellefontaine, who searches the rest of her life up and down La Louisiane for her newlywed husband, Gabriel Lajeunesse, after they are separated by British soldiers.
