Lopukhina, Evdokiia Fedorovna
Born July 30 (Aug. 9), 1669, in Moscow; died there Aug. 27 (Sept. 7), 1731. The first wife of Peter I (from 1689) and the mother of Tsarevich Aleksei. Lopukhina was brought up in the family of the boyars Lopukhin, who adhered to the old ways. Her conservatism and her inability and unwillingness to help Peter I led to discord between the spouses. Lopukhina was exiled to Suzdal’, and in 1698 she was forced to take the veil. After the trial of Tsarevich Aleksei, who had secretly corresponded with his mother, Lopukhina was transferred to the Ladoga Uspenskii Monastery in 1718, and in 1725 to the Shlissel’burg Fortress. After her release in 1727 she lived in Moscow at the Voznesenskii Monastery, where she was treated like a tsarina. REFERENCEGolikova, N. B.
