Rubinshtein, Evgeniia Samoilovna 

Born Jan. 12 (24), 1891, in St. Petersburg. Soviet climatologist. Professor (1934). Doctor of geographical sciences (1937). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1961). Member of the CPSU since 1945.

Rubinshtein graduated from the Bestuzhev Courses (a women’s institution of higher learning) in 1912. She began working in the Main Geophysical Observatory in 1914. She has written and edited important works on climate, especially on temperature conditions, in, for example, the Great Soviet Atlas of the World (vol. 1, 1937), the Physical and Geographic Atlas of the World (1964), the Marine Atlas (vol. 2, 1953), and the Atlas of the Antarctic (vol. 1, 1966).

Rubinshtein has also done research on statistical methods of analyzing meteorological observations and on climatic changes in the northern hemisphere and the world as a whole. She developed the scientific basis for determining the location of a network of weather stations. Rubinshtein has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
