explosive bolt [ik′splō·siv ′bōlt]
(aerospace engineering)
A bolt designed to contain a remote-initiated explosive charge which, upon detonation, will shear the bolt or cause it to fail otherwise; applicable to such uses as stage separation of rockets, jettison of expended fuel tanks, and ejection of parachutes.
