radiation therapyor radiotherapy or therapeutic radiologyUse of radiation sources to treat or relieve diseases, usually cancer (including leukemia). The ionizing radiation primarily used to destroy diseased cells works best on fast-growing cancers. However, radiation can also cause cancer (see radiation injury) and is no longer used for benign conditions. Other complications include nausea, hair loss, weight loss, and weakness. Radioactive substances may be implanted in tumours (see nuclear medicine). External radiation involves 10–20 sessions over several months, either after surgical removal of the growth or when surgery is impossible; it can deliver higher doses to deep tumours than implantation. Infrared radiation and ultraviolet radiation is applied with lamps to relieve inflammation. radiotherapy the treatment of disease, esp cancer, by means of alpha or beta particles emitted from an implanted or ingested radioisotope, or by means of a beam of high-energy radiation radiotherapy [¦rād·ē·ō′ther·ə·pē] (medicine) How to thank TFD for its existence? | In this study, where CA4P is used in conjunction with external beam radiotherapy, prolonged reductions in tumor blood flow were seen following CA4P treatment. The technique is designed to deliver a large dose of radiation to the tumor while sparing surrounding healthy tissue, often as a boost to external beam radiotherapy treatments or as a primary treatment for other diseases such as gynecological cancers. With our five years of experience in performing 3D conformal external beam radiotherapy and CT based brachytherapy, it's a natural evolution for Scripps to start IMRT with this new hardware and software. |
