FMD/C (Fluorescent Multilayer Disk/Card) An optical storage technology from Constellation 3D Inc., New York, that offered a dramatic increase in capacity, but never became a commercial success. An FMD disk was expected to have the capacity of 200 CD-ROMs or 15 dual-layer DVDs. Read-only, write-once and recordable disks, smart cards and flash card-sized modules were also planned. By using fluorescent material in the pits of the storage layers, the reflected light from the laser was able to traverse as many as 100 or more layers.
