Fanardzhian, Varfolomei Artem’evich
Born Aug. 20 (Sept. 1), 1898, in Akhaltsikhe; died Apr. 3, 1976, in Yerevan. Soviet roentgenologist and radiologist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1956); corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1960). Member of the CPSU from 1946. Fanardzhian graduated from the medical department of the University of Azerbaijan in 1924. In 1927 he became director of the subdepartment of roentgenology of the Yerevan Medical Institute. In 1946, while holding this post, he founded the Yerevan Institute of Roentgenology and Oncology, where he also served as director. Fanardzhian’s major work dealt with the roentgen diagnosis of peptic ulcers, gastritides, stomach cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, and pleurisy; the biological effects of ionizing radiation; and the radiation therapy of tumors. Fanardzhian established that, in the presence of a duodenal ulcer, changes in the shape of the duodenal bulb depend on the location of Haudek’s niche.
