Faneuil, Peter (1700–43) merchant; born in New Rochelle, N.Y. Of Huguenot descent, he went to Boston and became the favorite of his uncle, Andrew, from whom he inherited a large fortune (1738). He offered to donate a public marketplace to Boston. The hesitant townspeople approved the gift by a vote of 367 in favor, 360 opposed (1740). He died as the building was being completed. |
