Farnham (fär`nəm), town (1991 pop. 35,492), Surrey, SE England, on the Wey River. It is a market town but is no longer the important grain and wool center it was in the 17th and early 18th cent. Farnham also has engineering and timber industries. A castle, the residence of the bishops of Winchester from 1160 to 1926, houses the Overseas Service College. The castle was built in the late 17th cent. on the site of a Norman castle that was destroyed in 1648. Aldershot, site of a military camp, is nearby. William Cobbett Cobbett, William , 1763?–1835, British journalist and reformer. The son of a farm laborer, he ran away from home at 14 and later joined the British army.
