Farrukhabad (fər
kh`äbäd'), joint municipality with Fategarh (total 1991 pop. 208,727), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India, on the Ganges River. It is a district administrative center and a market for tobacco, fruit, and potatoes. Perfume, cotton prints, and saltpeter are manufactured. A fort was founded (c.1714) on the site of the present-day town by the Afghan ruler Nawab Muhammad Khan. Farrukhabad was captured by the Marathas Marathas or Mahrattas , Marathi-speaking people of W central India, known for their ability as warriors and their devotion to Hinduism. From their homeland in Maharashtra their chieftains rose to power in the 17th cent.
