Fascine

a bundle of dry branches bound together with twisted withes or wire. Fascines may be light or heavy; heavy fascines, measuring 5–10 m in length and 0.6–1.2 m in diameter, are filled with pebbles, gravel, or similar material. Fascines are used in fortifications, in revetments and other structures designed to strengthen high embankments, and in the building of roads across swamps. In the past, fascines were used to cross moats during fortress assaults.
