Faust, Frederick Shiller (Max Brand, pen name) (1892–1944) writer; born in Seattle, Wash. He published the first of his 100 "Max Brand" Westerns in 1917. Using 18 additional pseudonyms for an estimated 30 million words' worth of detective stories, thrillers, and screenplays, he earned the sobriquet "king of the pulp writers." His most famous works were Destry Rides Again (1930) and the Dr. Kildare film series. He also wrote serious poetry, published in such collections as Dionysus in Hades (1931). He lived in Italy (1926–38) and was killed there in action as a war correspondent.
