Fawcett, Henry (fô`sət), 1833–84, English economist and statesman. A follower of John Stuart Mill, he was professor of political economy at Cambridge, and his Manual of Political Economy (1863) was widely read. As member of Parliament and later postmaster general under William Gladstone he achieved several important improvements in the postal system. His wife,

Dame Millicent Garrett Fawcett, 1847–1929, noted English feminist, became the leader of the nonmilitant suffragists. She was made Dame of the British Empire in 1924.
