Fazlul Huq, Abul Kasem 

Born 1873, in the village of Chakhar, Barisal District, Bengal; died Apr. 27, 1962, in Dacca. State and political figure in the colony of Bengal and Pakistan. Lawyer.

In 1918, Fazlul Huq was president of the Muslim Leaque and general secretary of the Indian National Congress. In 1924–25 he served as minister of education for Bengal. In 1927 he founded the Peasants’ Party of Bengal, which he led until 1947. He served as mayor of Calcutta in 1935–36 and as chief minister of Bengal from 1937 to 1943.

In Pakistan Fazlul Huq founded the Peasants’ and Workers’ Party (1953) and headed the United Front of Opposition Parties (1953–54). In 1955–56 he was the Pakistani minister of international affairs and education, and from 1956 to 1958 he served as governor of East Pakistan.
