Fedorenko, Nikolai Prokof’evich 

Born Apr. 28 (May 11), 1917, in the village of Preobrazhenka, now in Zaporozh’e Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Soviet economist. Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964; corresponding member, 1962). Member of the CPSU since 1942.

Fedorenko completed four courses at the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology in 1941 and graduated from the Military Chemical Academy in 1942. From 1949 to 1962 he taught at the Moscow Institute of Fine Chemical Technology, headed the department of chemical industrial economics, and served as deputy director of the institute. In 1963 he was named director of the Central Economic Mathematical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1971, Fedorenko was appointed academy secretary of the Department of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He is editor in chief of the journal Economics and Mathematical Methods.

Fedorenko’s principal works deal with Soviet economics—specifically, the economics of the chemical industry, the optimal functioning of the national economy, and the use of mathematical methods and electronic computers in planning and management.

Fedorenko was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1970. He was also awarded the Order of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals.
