Fedorov, Aleksandr Aleksandrovich 

Born Nov. 24 (Dec. 7), 1906, in Tver’, now the city of Kalinin. Soviet botanist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Member of the CPSU since 1942. Brother of Andrei Aleksandrovich Fedorov.

Fedorov graduated from the Tver’ Pedagogical Institute in 1929. From 1929 to 1934 he worked at the Sukhumi and Lenkoran divisions of the All-Union Institute of Plant Growing. Beginning in 1934 he worked at the V. L. Komarov Botanical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. He was appointed assistant director of the institute in 1947 and served as director from 1962 to 1976.

Fedorov’s main works are devoted to plant morphology (including teratology), botanical resource management, and the taxonomy of flowering plants. He is coauthor of the Atlas of Descriptive Morphology of Higher Plants: The Leaf (1956), The Stem and Root (1962), and The Flower (1975). He is editor in chief of the six-volume Life of Plants (vol. 1, 1974—).

Fedorov has been awarded four Orders of the Red Banner of Labor and various medals. He was the recipient of the V. L. Komarov Prize of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1957.
