Fedotov, Grigorii Ivanovich 

Born Apr. 11 (24), 1916, in the village of Glukhovo, in what is now Noginsk Raion, Moscow Oblast; died Dec. 8, 1957, in Moscow. Soviet soccer player and coach. Honored Master of Sport (1940). Officer in the Soviet Army.

In the late 1930’s and 1940’s, Fedotov was one of the best soccer players in Europe. He played a major role in the establishment of the Soviet school of soccer. He was champion of the USSR from 1946 to 1948 while a member of the team of the Central Sports Club of the Army (CSCA).

In 1964 the CSCA established a challenge prize in honor of Fedotov, to be awarded annually to the best-scoring team in the USSR soccer championship. Fedotov’s name has also been given to an honorary soccer club consisting of forwards of major-league teams who score more than 100 goals in the USSR championships.

Fedotov was awarded two orders and various medals.
