Fellenberg, Philipp Emanuel von (fē`lĭp āmä`n ĕl fən fĕl`ənbĕrkh), 1771–1844, Swiss educator and agriculturist. He purchased (1799) an estate, Hofwyl (near Bern), where he put into practice his theory of combining farm training with a well-rounded education, encouraging productive labor, and bringing pupils from different social levels into contact. His school attracted students from all parts of Europe and was influential in the development of educational theories and especially of manual training in education. Fellenberg also founded an orphan asylum (1804), a colony for poor boys (1816), and other schools, including a vocational school. |
