Fenneman, Nevin M. (nĕv`ĭn fĕn`əmən), 1865–1945, American geologist, geographer, and teacher, b. Lima, Ohio; B.A. (1883) Heidelberg College, Ohio; M.A. (1900); Ph.D. (1901) Univ. of Chicago. He founded and was chairman (1907–37) of the department of geology and geography at the Univ. of Cincinnati. Fenneman was associated (1901–24) with the U.S. Geological Survey and also with three state geological surveys. He is noted for his work on the physiography of the United States; his physiographic map of the United States (1915–16) was adopted by the U.S. Geological Survey. He is the author of Physiography of Western United States (1931) and Physiography of Eastern United States (1938), both of which remain as standard reference works. Fenneman served as president of the Association of American Geographers (1918) and of the Geological Society of America (1935).
