Feofilov, Petr Petrovich
Born Mar. 31 (Apr. 13), 1915, in the city of Sol’vychegodsk, now in Arkhangel’sk Oblast. Soviet physicist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Feofilov graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1939. Since then, he has been on the staff of the State Optical Institute. Feofilov’s main works deal with luminescence, spectroscopy, and quantum optics. Feofilov studied the luminescence of crystals and of solutions of complex organic compounds. He developed an oscillograph method for the study of high-speed physical processes. He discovered the latent anisotropy of the luminescent centers in cubic crystals and carried out research in the optics of synthetic crystals, such as fluorite. Together with V. V. Ovsiankin, Feofilov discovered cooperative sensitized luminescence. He also developed crystals for lasers. Feofilov received the State Prize of the USSR in 1949 and 1975. He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, and various medals. WORKSPoliarizovannaia liuminestsentsiia atomov, molekul i kristallov.
