Fermo

Fermo (fĕr`mō), town (1991 pop. 35,311), in the Marche, central Italy, on a hill in the Apennines, near the Adriatic Sea. Leather and cotton goods are manufactured, and it has a noted bronze foundry. An ancient town founded by the Sabines, Fermo was held by the papacy from the mid-16th cent. to 1860. Of note are pre-Roman walls, Roman ruins, and a 13th-century Gothic cathedral.

Out of the other six surviving examples, one is in London's Victoria & Albert Museum, two are in the treasury of the Basilica of San Marco, Venice, one is in the Cathedral of Fermo, Italy, another is in the Louvre in Paris and one was stolen from the Museum of Limoges, France, in 1980.
Ski champion Alberto Tomba has agreed to pay a $1,000 fine in Fermo, Italy, sparing him a 20-day jail term for a fracas he had with a photographer two years ago, Italian news agencies reported.
