Ferrari, Gaudenzio (goudān`tsēō fār-rä`rē), c.1480–1546, Italian painter, one of the leading representatives of the Lombard school. He worked chiefly in the churches of Varallo (N Piedmont), Vercelli, and Milan and produced many paintings, most of them now in the galleries of Lombardy and Piedmont. At its best his art is characterized by inventiveness, fine feeling for the dramatic and decorative, and bright and pleasing color. Notable examples include the frescoes in Santa Maria delle Grazie, Varallo; incidents in the lives of Mary Magdalene and the Virgin, in the Church of San Cristoforo, Vercelli; Choir of Singing Angels, in Santa Maria dei Miracoli, at Saronno; and the Scourging of Christ, in Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan.
