ferrosilicon [¦fe·rō′sil·ə·kən]
(metallurgy) A crude ferroalloy containing 15-95% silicon and used in steelmaking. Ferrosilicon a ferroalloy whose principal components are iron and silicon. The average content of Si may be 90, 75, 65, 45, 25, or 18 percent, with iron and impurities constituting the remainder. Ferrosilicon is produced from quartzites and sometimes from quartz in large ore heat-treating furnaces. It is used for deoxidizing and alloying steel, and the richer types of the alloy are also used in reducing metals from metal oxides. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
