Figueres (fēgā`rəs) or Figueras (–räs) town (1990 pop. 34,463), Girona prov., NE Spain, in Catalonia, near the French border. Traditionally a fortified city because of its strategic location, it is now an important communications center. Its manufactures include chemicals, textiles, and cement. In the Spanish civil war Figueres served briefly as the seat of the Loyalist government. Its 18th-century fortress is now a prison. Salvador Dalí Dalí, Salvador , 1904–89, Spanish painter. At first influenced by futurism, in 1924 Dalí came under the influence of the Italian painter de Chirico and by 1929 he had become a leader of surrealism.
