Film Coating
(Russian, tsellofanirovanie), in printing, the application of a transparent synthetic film to a sheet of printed material by means of pressure. This is done to improve resistance of jackets, covers, and postcards to the effects of the environment, as well as to improve the appearance of the article. Because of its poor quality, the cellophane originally used (for which the process was named in Russian) has been replaced by films of polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, and similar materials, with thicknesses of 10–20 microns.
