Finistère 

a department in northwestern France, in Brittany. Area, 7,000 sq km. Population, 783,000 (1975). The capital is Quimper. The chief branch of the economy is agriculture, including the cultivation of grains, potatoes, and early vegetables, and the raising of livestock. The department is the country’s leading producer of hogs. It also has fishing. Industry includes ship repair, the manufacture of electronics equipment (in Brest), and food processing, including fish canning. The seacoast is a tourist area and has health resorts.

Pierre-Jakez Helias' childhood memoir of life in the pays Bigouden in southern Finistere in the early twentieth century begins with a description of the hemp clothing Breton peasants wore for work and the heavy, gray, absorbent and rarely-laundered garments that bear precious little resemblance to the "charming" and "infinitely varied" dress beloved of artists, tourists and other outside admirers of the region (and of Helias' corner of it in particular).
My initial curiosity was sparked by Giovanni's Room, Finistere, and The City and the Pillar, each of which I currently own in the 39-cent editions that were available at that time.
