In southwestern KS, northwest of Dodge City; organized as Sequoyah County Mar 6, 1873 from Arapahoe and Foote counties; name changed Feb 21, 1883; Garfield County was annexed to Finney County in 1893. Name Origin: For David W. Finney, lieutenant governor of KS (1861-65) and KS legislator.

Area (sq mi): 1302.62 (land 1301.77; water 0.84). Pop per sq mi: 30.00.
Pop 2005: 38,988. State rank: 11. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.80%; 1990-2000 22.50%. Pop 2000: 40,523 (White 51.40%; Black or African American 1.30%; Hispanic or Latino 43.30%; Asian 2.90%; Other 26.90%). Foreign born: 22.70%. Median age: 28.10.
Income 2000: per capita $15,377; median household $38,474; Pop below poverty level: 14.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,585-$21,098.
